Festival of Social Science event at St James Park

Football manager sackings and implications for sports scientists

Monday 6 November 2017, 18.00, for ‘kick off’ at 18.30 until 19.30

RGB Lounge, Exeter City Football Club, St James’ Park Road, Exeter, EX4 6QF

This event is part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science. The ‘sack race’ in English professional football has become part of the sporting landscape, with sackings and hirings being most evident when team performance dips and league table status slides. But the implications of the managerial merry go round extend beyond a manager’s departure, and have profound implications for the work and working lives of sports scientists.

This group of professionals are increasingly key to athletes achieving sustained high performance outcomes, yet their experiences of managerial change are rarely heard.

We will show you what happens when managers and their managerial teams depart and new ones arrive. We will explore research from the ‘inside’ of English professional football and hear accounts from sports science workers that go beyond the news headlines.
