Belgian Grecians on Tour
It was the throw of a dart that decided they’d be Grecians and on the day of the Cheltenham game (12 April 2014) they made their first visit to Exeter and took a tour of SJP.
Needing a name for their 5-a-side team some time in the 1990s, various football clubs were stuck to a dart board and a dart thrown. The group of 13 Belgian friends played football as Exeter City for years and then made the decision to visit our fair city.
So with lots of City shirts on show, the group met Trustee Bernadette Coates for their ground tour prior to kick-off, kindly arranged through Andy Gillard at the Club. Taken around the St James Centre, the Directors’ box, the home and away dressing rooms and the dugouts, the Belgian’s asked lots of questions about the history and fortunes of their adopted club.
After the tour, Bernadette said “It was a real pleasure to take them around SJP and talk about our club. We talked about the challenge of being a supporter owned club, our two Wembley trips, the anniversary of the game against Brazil and the FA Cup games against Manchester United.”
Having been shown the Heart of the Big Bank during the tour, the lads decided that would be their spot for the game and thankfully they saw City finally break their Cheltenham hoo-doo! The Trust and Club looks forward to seeing them again soon at SJP.
